Circle Internet Group announced it has acquired fundamental assets from IBM’s blockchain patent portfolio, instantly giving the company the largest blockchain patent holdings in the United States.

The deal includes more than 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 issued patents worldwide, covering blockchain technology, banking, financial services, insurance, enterprise infrastructure, supply chain verification, and secure cloud operations.

A Bigger Patent Arsenal Emerges

Beyond Stablecoins And Payments

The announcement signals that Circle’s ambitions extend well beyond issuing USDC.

According to the company, the expanded intellectual property portfolio supports its long-term vision of building the internet financial system. Circle and IBM also said they intend to explore additional commercial opportunities following the acquisition, suggesting the relationship may continue beyond a straightforward patent transfer.

Infrastructure Over Hype

Unlike announcements centered around token launches or speculative partnerships, this move focuses on ownership of the underlying technology itself.

The Circle blockchain patent portfolio now spans nearly every major layer of enterprise blockchain infrastructure. Whether those patents translate into broader adoption of USDC, Loading profile preview Network, Arc, and future onchain financial products remains the next chapter investors will be watching.
